THE SECRETS OF MAPLE

image

Winter is finally ending, meaning the time everyone is waiting for; maple sugar time; begins! This gourmet and festive tradition is sometimes associated with excess.

At DOSE, we offer you a more reasonable way to celebrate the arrival of Spring without forgetting to treat yourself: discovering our delicious juices Kick and Basil! We chose to add a small amount of maple syrup and water to these juices because in addition to giving them this pleasant taste, these ingredients have many benefits.

Maple water and syrup, what’s the difference?
Maple water is the 100% pure clear and nourishing sap. It contains only 2 to 3% of sugar and flows naturally from the trees, when the night frosts are followed by days of thaw, sign that Spring is finally coming… The sap is then sterilized to be preserved and consumed as a refreshing drink.

As for the concentrated syrup, it is made by heating the sap to evaporate much of the water. It takes about 40 liters of water to get a liter of syrup! Maple syrup is a natural sweetener that contains no additives or dyes with very interesting organoleptic and nutritional properties.

MAPLE PROPERTIES

AN ENERGY BOOST
Maple syrup is mainly composed of carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose and fructose) which makes it a good source of energy. Glucose and fructose are two simple sugars that are easily assimilated because they do not need any digestion. Athletes will be happy to learn that maple syrup is a good ally to boost energy before, during and after a workout because carbohydrates are quickly brought to muscles. All of this while being one of the least caloric sweetening products; 177 calories for 50 ml of syrup and 40 calories for 500 ml of maple water.

RICH IN MINERALS
In addition of containing fewer calories than honey, maple syrup provides essential minerals such as manganese, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium that are necessary for the proper functioning of our bodies. Did you know that a serving of maple water contains as much manganese as a cup of kale? This mineral is necessary for the proper functioning of several enzymes and helps maintaining bone health and cognitive function.

FULL OF ANTIOXIDANTS
Maple water and syrup are full of polyphenols; organic molecules known for their antioxidant properties. These polyphenols are more abundant in maple syrup than in other sweetening products: you can find 400 times more polyphenols in maple syrup than in agave syrup.

LOW GLYCEMIC INDEX
Maple syrup has a lower glycemic index than other sweeteners; meaning the glucose is diffused gradually in the body thus avoiding the drops of energy and controlling the feeling of hunger. Ideal when doing exercise or a cleanse!

KICK is the juice that will wake you. A subtle blend of the sweet taste of maple and the spicy taste of cayenne pepper, it will boost your immune system and kick your metabolism.

BASIL is a reinvented lemonade. Energetic and nutritious, it combines the hydrating benefits of maple water with the refreshing taste of basil and the many qualities of chia.

3 REASONS WHY FLAX IS A SUPER SUPERFOOD

image

We often hear about flax and how amazing it is… but do we really know what’s so amazing about it and why “health freaks” call it a superfood?

Flax is actually a small annual plant from which we cultivate the seeds and oil for consumption. It has been cultivated for thousand of years!

Here are 3 main reasons why we think flax is an amazing superfood to consume on a regular basis.

1. IT DECREASES HUNGER
Flaxseeds contain both soluble fibers and insoluble fibers. The first ones help slow digestion, which then triggers some hormones responsible of appetite’s control. Therefore it can help provide a feeling of fullness. On top of that, these fibers help your digestive system do its job efficiently.

This superfood is also really rich in plant-based proteins, which also help reduce hunger. So if you have a vegetarian/vegan diet and are looking for a way to increase your proteins intake, consuming flax is a brilliant way to do so!

image

2. IT HELPS CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR
Studies have shown that people who suffered from type 2 diabetes and started consuming flaxseeds powder daily (10 to 20 grams) for a month were able to reduce their blood sugar levels from 8 to 20%, because the insoluble fibers of flaxseeds help slow down the release of sugar in blood. Hyperglycemia (too much sugar in blood) is an annoying and unhealthy issue; people who have it live with fatigue, headaches, urges to urinate, dry mouth, increased hunger, and so on. Flaxseeds can help you control your blood sugar levels and therefore reduce these symptoms.

image

3. IT CAN LOWER CHOLESTEROL
Another thing pretty awesome about flaxseeds is that they are full of omega-3 fats. We all heard about these fats, but what do they do specifically? Among other things: they can prevent cholesterol from being deposited in blood vessels of your heart. Studies have shown that flaxseed powder taken daily can reduce cholesterol, especially LDL cholesterol (the « bad » one) in a significant way.

An important thing to know if you are consuming or start consuming flaxseed is that it’s better to take it ground or milled. If flax isn’t chewed properly, you will simply undigest it and flush it out of your system. Another great way to consume it is to replace your regular cooking oil by flax oil.😌

At DOSE, we just launched our Upcycled Smoothie line that reuses the pulp of our juices, contains 10 grams of plant-based protein in each bottle AND 5 grams of organic flaxseeds.

You can find them here!

HAPPY FOOD = HAPPY MOOD

image

What if the feeling of happiness depended on the content of our plate?

It is now known that some nutrients in foods tend to make us happier. Their action is not only fast and comforting as it is often the case when we eat greasy and sugary foods (pfff! we never do this😉). A healthy and balanced diet can have a real beneficial effect on our mood and energy!

Here are our favorite happy foods!

image

BEETS
It’s hard to compete with the amazing beet. Beets contain betaine, which helps serotonin production in the brain, thus elevating our mood. They also are a source of folic acid, which stabilizes our emotions, improving our chances of happiness with every bite.

Our juices and smoothies with beets: SAMBA, UPBEET, STRAWBERRY HILL

image

FRESH GINGER
Ginger is a root famous for its aphrodisiac powers that awakens our taste buds and our bodies 😉 Less known is its antibacterial and antiviral effect that helps stimulate the digestive and immune system, lowering fevers, protecting the liver and preventing nauseas and digestive disorders. Ginger boosts your body and your spirit!

Our juices and smoothies with ginger: TANGO, SAMBA, YOGI, CACTUS, BRIGHT SIDE

image

SPINACH
Not only does spinach can make you as strong as Popeye but it can also make you happy, thanks to two components: magnesium and folic acid. Magnesium is known for its tranquilizing and relaxing effects, perfect when you are feeling a little down. To stay focused and concentrated all day long while keeping your good mood, one cup (250 mL) of fresh spinach will do a great job; it contains 15 % of the daily recommended level of folate.

Our juices and smoothies with spinach: YOGI, CACTUS, FOCUS, GREEN LIGHT

image

ORANGES
With an orange you will not only satisfy your sweet tooth, you’ll be loading your diet with Vitamin C, which has been linked to the reduce of anxiety and depression. It will boost your immune system with antioxidants and also help your digestion. A fantastic way to start the day with a great deal of energy!

Our juices with oranges: SAMBA, ZEST

image

FLAXSEEDS
Just a single serving of flaxseeds contains 6,3 mg of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 that helps boost our mood. Here’s how ALA works: when your blood levels of ALA are low, so are you; low ALA levels increase the risk of inflammation, which has been linked to depression. The flaxseeds fibers can help improve the health of your gut, making your whole body healthier and happier.

Our smoothies with flaxseeds: STRAWBERRY HILL, UPBEET, GREEN LIGHT, BRIGHT SIDE, MATCHA

image

KALE
This leafy green does have some serious happiness-boosting potential! Full of vitamin C, B-6, potassium, iron and magnesium, kale is one of nature’s best anti-depression foods. Potassium is an electrolyte that helps lower blood pressure. So useful if you feel a little tense!

Our juices and smoothies with kale: YOGI, CACTUS, FOCUS, GREEN LIGHT, MATCHA, SAMBA

image

BANANAS
Banana contains up to 10 mg of dopamine, this chemical substance in our brain responsible for feelings of joy. Banana is also a source of tryptophan, a protein that stimulates the production of serotonin, the mood regulating hormone. Serotonin is known to be a powerful natural relaxant. When you feel stressed or tired, banana helps regulate our mood.

FAUNA FOUNDATION, RESCUING THE CHIMPS

image
image

Did you know that chimpanzees and humans have more than 98% of common genes?

Did you also know that chimpanzees and humans are genetically more related than chimpanzees and gorillas?

And did you know that just outside of Montreal, in the suburb of Carignan, exists a sanctuary where chimps are being taken care of?

Fauna Foundation is a refuge for animals that have been mistreated and/or rescued from zoos, labs and other entertainment or agriculture industries.

Seven of the eleven chimps there come from biomedical research in the US. They were used in invasive studies, including HIV research (which means some of them are infected with HIV). Before arriving at Fauna, their lives were limited to 5x5x7 feet cages.

Some, like Blackie and Dolly, lived at Parc Safari for over 4 decades. And the others, Tatu and Loulis, came from a Chimpanzee & Human Communication Institute in the US, which is now closed, and where they learned to use American Sign Language! They currently still use Sign Language with Dr Mary-Lee Jensvold, a Primate Communication Scientist who works at Fauna, and other caregivers who know ASL.

image

When chimpanzees arrive at the sanctuary, they’re in bad shape. Their mental health is quite fragile: some start plucking their own hair while others suffer from an important post traumatic stress disorder along with self-abuse.

Chance, one of the females, couldn’t even stand on the floor when she arrived…

FAUNA
The devoted and passionate employees of Fauna are guardian angels and make sure the chimps” arrival is as smooth as possible. They welcome the chimps with their favorite foods and objects in order to avoid an overwhelming or too drastic transition. Then, they set a healthy routine bit by bit for these new residents.

We had the privilege to visit the sanctuary last Summer to learn more about Fauna’s mission but also the destiny of its dwellers. Dr Jensvold and all the team really ease the lives of the animals living there. If the beginning of their existence wasn’t fun and free, Fauna makes sure the rest of it is filled with happiness, good care and love.

image
image

Doctor Mary Lee Jensvold
Dr Jensvold was the director of the Chimpanzee & Human Communication Institute in Ellensburg (WA) before it closed. She was also an Associate Professor in Primate Behavior and Anthropology at Central Washington University. She has worked with two of Fauna’s chimps (Tatu and Loulis) before they arrived here in 2013. She pursued teaching for a year at the university before coming to Fauna full time, back to her friends Loulis and Tatu.

Funny story: she told me Tatu was kind of angry that she was abandoned for a year… so she wouldn’t « speak » to her when she came to the sanctuary in 2014. Fortunately, everything’s back to normal now!

Chimps and juices!
Almost a year ago, before our visit, and even before we even knew about Fauna’s Foundation, we realized the refuge was buying many of our juices on a regular basis and it tickled our curiosity. We contacted the people working there and that’s how we learned that one of their chimpanzees, Tatu, drinks DOSE juice every day!

We simply couldn’t believe it!

They told us Tatu, like the others had a whole food diet, primarily vegan. However she had a few digestive problems and so drinking DOSE was a way to make sure she had an excellent nutrition. She loves our juices and has 2 per day! Can you believe that?

image

Moved by Fauna’s mandate and its chimps, we decided to get involved and now freely provide Tatu with our juices.

I would like to thank Mary Lee Jensvold for her precious time and generosity. Also, thank you to and all the amazing team at Fauna for doing such an inspiring and noble job.

Dr Jensvold believes we, humans, have a lot to learn from chimpanzees, such as our place in nature and the importance of humility. We couldn’t agree more.

They are always in need of volunteers, donations, etc.

LOOKING BETTER BY SLEEPING

Nowadays, when everything seems to be going super fast and when time seems to be a scarce resource, people often allow themselves to sleep less or simply neglect their sleep altogether… This can lead to many problems. Of course, when that happens, people may feel different during the day: feeling less effective at work and having difficulty to focus. However, some studies showed that a lack of sleep could also affect how other people around us see us.

In fact, participants who took part in a study by having not slept enough were qualified as looking less healthy and less attractive than when they had had enough sleep. Another study also demonstrated that people who hadn’t slept enough were perceived as having puffy eyelids, lighter skin, red eyes, more wrinkles and fine lines around their mouths, and simply looking sadder in general. This study even concludes by saying that a person’s eyes and mouth are key communication elements and that, when altered, could have an impact on their social sphere as a whole.

So, here are a few tips to improve your sleep quality (for your health as well as for your looks!):

Stay away from caffeine after 3PM

This includes teas, matchas, coffees and any other stimulant products that can keep you awake.

Bedroom: for sleep and sex only

Your bedroom shouldn’t be the place for anything else except these two activities as to not disrupt your sleep.

Calm atmosphere

Room’s temperature should be cool, not cold, and the decor should be peaceful. Also, you should choose sheets that are not too warm.

Avoid alcohol

Maybe you fall asleep more quickly when you take a glass or two, but your sleep cycles are disrupted.

Don’t nap for more than one hour, and do it before 3 PM

Get up if you can’t fall asleep!

If you’ve been in bed for 30 minutes and are still not sleeping, get up, get out of the bedroom and do something that doesn’t involve a screen (reading or writing for instance). Come back to bed only when you feel like you will easily fall asleep.

To your pillows! Go!

UPCYCLING: IMPROVED RECYCLING

image

Each year, more than 13 millions tons of residual materials are produced in the province of Quebec only. And, alone, the non residential sector of Canada creates over 15 millions tons of waste.

Our waste directly impacts our soil which directly impacts us. It contaminates what we eat: plants that grow in the soil, livestock that eat it… and therefore can create many health problems, food poisoning or congenital illnesses for instance.

Luckily, awareness toward the polluting effect of waste is increasing.

One way to reduce waste is to upcycle.

To what?

Upcycling! It’s like recycling to the highest level.

Recycling needs an extern source of energy (water, electricity, etc.) to transform a product.

Upcycling means to take something (an object, food, anything) that is no longer good nor functional and, instead of throwing it in the trash or in the recycle bin, you create something else with it, changing its utility.

Not only you transform the object but you actually transform it into something even better than its original form, upgrading its purpose.

Such a revalorisation of things prevents you from creating more waste but will also help you in a practical and/or decorative way.

Upcycling is therefore a way to lower your negative impact on the environment of course by reducing your waste, but it’s also a great manner to explore your creativity and to save money. #winwin

Here are a few examples of pretty and useful things you can create at home instead of getting rid of your stuff.

5 AMAZING THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SMOOTHIES

image

Smoothies are quite the thing right now!

Celebrities are sharing their secret recipe (Blake Lively and her beet detoxifying smoothie, Gwyneth Paltrow and her peachy protein smoothie and many many others!).

We’ve also seen some of our friends posting pictures of these healthy beverages on social medias. You can order them at any trendy coffeeshop…

We won’t lie; we think it’s good news!

Sure, smoothies help reduce cravings and improve hydration.

But that’s not all! Did you know that smoothie can also :

1. GIVE A HEALTHY GLOW

image

Depending on what you decide to put in your smoothie, it can help you have a nicer and fresher skin tone. Add some mango, orange, pumpkin or carrot to your blend: they are full of carotenoids which play a role in skin’s condition.

2. HELP WITH IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

image

And many other digestive problems, actually! You see: as smoothies are liquid, they make it easier for your body to break down the nutrients of the veggies and fruits they contain and to digest. Also ingredients such as spinach, kale, celery, carrots, strawberries and blueberries are full of alkaline which help reduce the discomfort of acid reflux.

3. PROMOTE FIBERS’ CONSUMPTION

image

With all the fruits and veggies they contain, smoothies are a really good source of fiber and help you consume the 25 grams to 30 grams that are recommended daily. And why are fibers are so important for your body? They help digestion, control blood sugar and lower cholesterol. Where can you find them? In many many fruits and veggies. To name a few: avocado, dattes, apples, berries, pears…

4. DIVERSIFY YOUR NUTRIENTS’ INTAKE

image

The more varieties of (organic) veggies and fruits you put in your smoothie, the more nutritious it gets and the more it can help your body get rid of some toxins that your liver and/or blood might have accumulated. Learn more about papayas, beets or garlic for example; you’ll be surprised by their numerous virtues!

5. REDUCE RISKS OF DIABETES

image

Studies have shown that smoothies can help prevent Type 2 diabetes, especially when you add leafy greens (spinach, lettuce, kale, sprouts, etc.) to your mixture.

Now we get why drinking smoothies is kind of a big deal. We can’t wait to activate the blender and make some!

But hey! Don’t forget: smoothies can quickly become too sugary and high-calorie when you add sweet things like sorbet, sweetened juice or sweetened yogurt. Keep it simple, organic and natural. Your body will be happy!

HOW TO FIX A DISGUSTING SMOOTHIE

image

It has happened to all of us at least once: we’re full of good intentions and decide to make a healthy smoothie, but almost spit it when we take the first sip. But what do you do when you don’t want to throw the weird, bad tasting, beverage in the trash and waste all the good things that you have unfortunately mixed together?

We found solutions for you. They’re super easy and honestly can fix almost every smoothie mistake!

PROBLEM: IT TASTES LIKE DIRT

image

Sometimes, when you put too many raw veggies in your mix, it can taste a bit earthy… Broccoli is good for dinner but a whole bouquet can be intense in a smoothie. What you have to do: add a teaspoon of vanilla extract. It will cover the weird taste, add a little touch of sweetness without being too sugary nor caloric! And if you don’t want it to be sweet, you can add grains or nuts, such as peanuts, sunflower seeds or cashews. It will become creamier with a nutty flavor.

PROBLEM: IT’S TOO SWEET

image

You like bananas, but maybe you’ve went a little bit crazy for your morning drink and it’s now just too sugary? What you have to do: add some lime or lemon juice or a little bit of cider vinegar. Acidity compensates for sweetness!

PROBLEM: IT’S THICK AS RUBBER (OR ALMOST)

image

Its texture is hardly drinkable… You need a spoon, worse: a fork, to consume it. If you wanted a smoothie bowl, it’s okay… but if you were planning to drink it on-the-go, it’s problematic. The solution is quite simple. What you have to do: add some fresh juice (cold-pressed of course!), coconut water or fruits that contain a lot of water, like watermelon for example, to your mix.

PROBLEM: IT’S TOO LIQUID

image

It’s not good when you’re “eating” your smoothie, but having the feeling you’re drinking flavoured water isn’t better when you wanted something smoother. What you have to do: the easiest thing is to add ice cubes! Otherwise, frozen fruits, a banana, yogurt or half of an avocado can solidify your beverage just enough.

Now, to your blenders!👩🏽‍🍳

DOSE UPCYCLE: VEGAN & SMOOTHIES FOR YOUR MORNINGS

image

For a while now, we’ve been looking for a way to reuse what’s left from our fruits and veggies after we juice them.

Why?
Because 41% of the waste produced in Canada annually comes from businesses and institutions (which we are a part of).

Because, in the province of Quebec only, we produce 13 millions tons of residual materials each year (1 ton = 1000kg…).

We think it’s time we reduce our waste and we want to start by reducing the volume of pulp we throw away after producing our juices.

How?
By “upcycling” which means updating a no longer useful object’s function by transforming it into something better instead of getting rid of it.

At Dose, the “object” we wanted to upcycle was our fruits and veggies’ pulp!

So we thought of smoothies, that complement our juices and are made with the same raw fruits AND vegetables.

We worked hard on this smoothies project for 8 months, full of trial and errors; full of too liquid, too solid, too weird smoothies…

Today, we’re proud and excited to finally reveal Upcycle!

Upcycle by Dose Juice: 4 different proteined smoothies that combine the nutrients of our cold-pressed juices, our pulp’s upgraded fibers and a plant-based protein.

As are our juices, our smoothies are not pasteurized, so we maintain their vitamins, enzymes and minerals.

As are our juices, they are put under high pressure to seal their freshness.

As our juices, they only contain raw fruits and veggies. No sugar added. No additive. No preservative agent. Nothing but ingredients you can recognize and pronounce.😉

Our new Upcycle line allows us to reduce our waste significantly. Currently, we are reusing the pulp of: Taxi’s pineapple, Oxy-3′s berries, Tango’s carrots and Samba’s beets.

Before 2020, we aim to reuse 100% of all the pulps that are accumulated during our juices production.

WHEN TAKING CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT ALSO MEANS TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF.

Our new smoothies contain 20% to 27% of your daily fibers requirement which are essential to facilitate your digestive system’s job.

We also added 10 grams of organic brown rice protein, totally vegan, in each bottle, to nourish yourself and give you the energy you need to go through your days.

After all, a busy lifestyle shouldn’t mean a messy diet!

Finally, each flavor contains at least one superfood known for its health benefits: turmeric, flax, goji and chlorella.

What are these new bottles of happiness’ flavors?

Bright Side (Mango, carrot and turmeric)

Strawberry Hill (Strawberry, banana and lax)

UpBeet (Beet, mango and goji)
